In the 1820s, Australia remained almost wholly unexplored, but more strategic points were identified and occupied. The settlement of Westernport took place between 1824 and 1827. Westernport, consisting of about 50 convicts, did not last for long, but Albany, similarly settled, did survive and eventually became permanent. The Melville Island settlement also did not endure for long but was moved soon afterwards to the mainland at Raffles Bay, the site of present-day Fort Wellington, where it became the basis of the city of Darwin.
